At around 12noon yesterday, students
representing National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), OAU Students
Union and the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) barricaded
the Ife-Ibadan express way, just in front of Oduduwa University in Ipetumodu
roundabout. The students were protesting against the subsidy
removal and carried placates with various inscriptions bearing their sentiments
on the issue. The protest which lasted for up to 30 minutes, was done at the
middle of the road thereby stopping the movement of all vehicles. This
consequentially led to heavy traffic of the road.
The students who uniformly tied red linen round
their heads, used the public address system in tongue-lashing the present
administration vowing that protests would continue across all states in Nigeria
until the policy is reversed. The protest witnessed a heavy presence of the
Nigerian Police and other security personnels but none disrupt or tried to stop
the students from protesting. The display was in the form of an aluta and
various songs were sang to convey their thoughts to on-lookers.
Recall that early this month, the Federal
Government announced the removal of subsidy and the deregularisation of the
downstream sector. This increased the pump price from N86 to N145. This has
generated a lot of protests and industrial actions. The Nigerian Labour Congress
went on strike for three days before calling it off on Monday in order to
negotiate with the government.
